What is Moxibustion?

As a form of heat therapy, Moxibustion involves burning “moxa” on or near the surface of your skin. The purpose of burning this type of dried plant material so close to the body is to warm the flow of QI in the body, to try and expel any negative influences.*

What Does a Typical Moxibustion Treatment Look Like?

During a Moxibustion treatment session, Moxa will be applied to specific acupuncture points or local areas on your body that you are experiencing pain or swelling. We will place heat shields on top of the acupuncture points, but we can also apply moxa to the skin without a shield for those who do not mind direct heat. The Moxa will then be lit, outed, and will begin to smolder. By letting the Moxa smolder, our practitioner will be able to apply the heat across the base and shield of the area we are treating. You will experience a warming sensation during the treatment sessions.*

What Can Be Treated With Moxibustion

Moxibustion can be used for a variety of different conditions. Some include:

  • Arthritis
  • Digestive Issues
  • Ulcerative Colitis (Inflammation)
  • Protection against the cold or flu

How Moxibustion Can Help You

As a technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Moxibustion is used for the purpose of strengthening the blood and stimulating your energy flow (QI). By applying moxa on the meridian points (or acupuncture points), we can help stimulate circulation and a better flow to of blood and Qi. Moxibustion is often used for general health, but other benefits can also be seen such as:

  • Pain reduction
  • Improved Digestion
