What is Shingles?

Shingles is an infection of an individual nerve and the skin surface that is supplied by the nerve. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Anyone who’s had chickenpox may develop shingles. After you recover from chickenpox, the virus can enter your nervous system and lie dormant for years.*

Symptoms of the disease include:

  • Pain, burning, numbness or tingling
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • A red rash that begins a few days after the pain
  • Fluid-filled blisters that break open and crust over
  • Itching
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Fatigue

Symptoms Of Shingles

If you suspect you are suffering from the disease, typically, shingles takes the following course*:

  • Acute pain, tingling, numbness, and itching on a specific part of the skin, on a single side of the body.*
  • Red blotches emerge that develop into itchy fluid-filled blisters.*
  • The rash may involve the face, eyes, mouth, and ears in some cases.*
  • Inflammation might be caused in the soft tissue under and around the rash.*
  • Minor scarring may occur where the blisters have been.*
  • A shingles episode normally lasts 2-4 weeks.*

If you are suffering from an outbreak reach out to your doctor right away, If you take antiviral drugs in the early stages, you may shorten the course of the infection.*

Your Different Treatment Options

Acupuncture

Acupuncture can help combat the symptoms and bring your body back to balance when dealing with Shingles. Acupuncture can help bring relief from pain due to shingles, reduce the need for painkillers, speed the healing of herpes zoster lesions, and reduce the incidence of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).*

Herbal Therapy

Herbal therapy may be recommended for those who are suffering from shingles and feel they have exhausted all other treatment options. We offer this new healing process to provide an education for our clients who otherwise feel like there is no way to improve their physical state. Different herbs can offer different ranges of benefits, and the sum of multiple herbs can be more powerful than each herb individually. Essentially, we will coach you on what herbs can help and guide you to finding the perfect combination and dosage for your healing.*

Cupping Therapy

During a cupping session, a therapist heats air inside a cup made from glass, bamboo, or horn. She places this on your body to pull the skin part way up into the cup. After several minutes, she removes the cups. They leave behind raised, red circles on your skin. Cupping, especially along with other treatments such as acupuncture and light therapy, can help ease shingles pain.*

Dietary Therapy

A weakened immune system worsens the effects of shingles. Some dietary changes can strengthen your immune system and prevent shingles from spreading to other parts of your body. Take steps to boost the function of your immune system by eating certain foods and avoiding others.*
