Adrenal Function Testing For Men & Women

Adrenal Function testing can indicate if the body is not producing enough of the adrenal hormones cortisol and aldosterone. Having a lack of these hormones results in fatigue, an inability to react properly to stress and infection, and higher blood pressure.

What is Adrenal Function Testing?

Adrenal Function Testing can help determine if adrenal insufficiency is present, and indicate if it is a primary or secondary insufficiency, and help determine the underlying cause of the condition. Adrenal insufficiency is a disorder caused by the body not producing enough of the adrenal hormones cortisol and aldosterone.

Cortisol affects the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, and affects glucose levels in the blood, is an anti-inflammatory agent, and helps the body react to stress caused by infection or trauma. Aldosterone manages the salt and potassium balance in the blood. People who do not have enough cortisol or aldosterone will become weak and dehydrated, be unable to maintain an adequate blood pressure or to respond to physical stress.

What are your Adrenal Glands?

The adrenal glands are small glands located on top of each kidney, and are made up of two distinct parts. The adrenal cortex, located on the outer part of the gland, which produces the hormone cortisol which regulates metabolism and the hormone aldosterone, which controls blood pressure. The second part, is the adrenal medulla, located on the inner part of the gland and produces adrenaline which helps your body respond to stress.

The adrenal glands are important because they help our body cope with stress. In past centuries, our adrenal glands helped with fight or flight to protect against predators and survival. Today, our stresses tend to be less intense but we are under stress for a longer duration, such as the stress you feel under financial restraints or a difficult job. What this means for our bodies is that our cortisol levels may stay elevated, resulting in fatigue, difficulty sleeping and anxiety.
