SUMMARY:“Way of the Tea”- The Tea Culture of China
DESCRIPTION:Way of the Tea\nDr. Bruce will introduce you to the Chinese Tea Culture and explain various teas and their healing/medicinal properties. He’ll also demonstrate the art of making tea. \n\n \nWay of the Tea \n\nCome prepared to taste! Various teas will be available for purchase! \nCost:  $20 donation – FREE if you bring a guest! \nChinese tea culture refers to the methods of preparation of tea\, the equipment used to make tea and the occasions in which tea is consumed in China. The terms chayi “Art of Tea 茶藝” and Tea Ceremony have been used\, but the term “Tea Culture 茶文化” includes more than just the ceremony. Also “culture” is easier to translate into English from the Chinese term “art 藝”. \nTea culture in China differs from that of Europe\, Britain or Japan in such things as preparation methods\, tasting methods and the occasions for which it is consumed. Even now\, in both casual and formal Chinese occasions\, tea is consumed regularly. In addition to being a drink\, Chinese tea is used in traditional Chinese medicine and in Chinese cuisine… \nThere are many different ways of brewing Chinese tea depending on variables like the formality of the occasion\, the means of the people preparing it and the kind of tea being brewed. For example\, green teas are more delicate than Oolong teas or black teas and should be brewed with cooler water as a result. The most informal method of brewing tea is the simple adding of leaves to a pot\, and hot water. This method is commonly found in households and restaurants\, as at dim sum (點心) or yum cha (飲茶) in Cantonese restaurants. Two other primary methods of brewing tea are the Chaou method and the Gongfucha method. Chaou brewing tends towards a more formal occasion and is generally used for more delicate teas\, medicinal teas and tea tastings. Gongfucha brewing is a far more formal method of tea brewing (mainly for oolong or double fermented teas like Pu-Erh) although even this method can be made more or less formal depending on the occasion. The first Ming Dynasty Emperor Hongwu contributed to the development of loose tea brewing by banning the production of compressed tea.

SUMMARY:Basics of Qi Gong
DESCRIPTION:Basics of QiGong\nQiGong is an over 5\,000 year old Chinese health method that combines slow graceful movements with mental concentration and breathing. The standing postures and breathing exercises improve circulation\, reduce stress\, cultivate and balance chi or “life energy\, and enhances the immune system! \nThis will be a participatory seminar – loose fitting clothes are suggested.  \nExercise is gentle\, there are no restrictions\, anyone can do it! \n$20 donation – FREE if you bring a guest! \n  \n\nWhat is Qigong?\nQigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures\, breathing techniques and focused intention. \nThe word Qigong (Chi Kung) is made up of two Chinese words. Qi is pronounced chee and is usually translated to mean the life force or vital-energy that flows through all things in the universe. \nThe second word\, Gong\, pronounced gung\, means accomplishment\, or skill that is cultivated through steady practice. Together\, Qigong (Chi Kung) means cultivating energy\, it is a system practiced for health maintenance\, healing and increasing vitality. \nQigong is an integration of physical postures\, breathing techniques\, and focused intentions. \nQigong practices can be classified as martial\, medical\, or spiritual. All styles have three things in common: they all involve a posture\, (whether moving or stationary)\, breathing techniques\, and mental focus. Some practices increase the Qi; others circulate it\, use it to cleanse and heal the body\, store it\, or emit Qi to help heal others. Practices vary from the soft internal styles such as Tai Chi; to the external\, vigorous styles such as Kung Fu. However\, the slow gentle movements of most Qigong forms can be easily adapted\, even for the physically challenged and can be practiced by all age groups. \nLike any other system of health care\, Qigong is not a panacea\, but it is certainly a highly effective health care practice. Many health care professionals recommend Qigong as an important form of alternative complementary medicine. \nQigong creates an awareness of and influences dimensions of our being that are not part of traditional exercise programs. Most other forms of exercise do not involve the meridian system used in acupuncture nor do they emphasize the importance of adding mindful intent and breathing techniques to physical movements. When these dimensions are added\, the benefits of exercise increase exponentially. \nThe gentle\, rhythmic movements of Qigong reduce stress\, build stamina\, increase vitality\, and enhance the immune system. It has also been found to improve cardiovascular\, respiratory\, circulatory\, lymphatic and digestive functions. \nThose who maintain a consistent practice of Qigong find that it helps one regain a youthful vitality\, maintain health even into old age and helps speed recovery from illness. Western scientific research confirms that Qigong reduces hypertension and the incidence of falling in the aged population. One of the more important long-term effects is that Qigong reestablishes the body/mind/soul connection. \nPeople do Qigong to maintain health\, heal their bodies\, calm their minds\, and reconnect with their spirit. \nWhen these three aspects of our being are integrated\, it encourages a positive outlook on life and helps eliminate harmful attitudes and behaviors. It also creates a balanced life style\, which brings greater harmony\, stability\, and enjoyment \nThere are a wide variety of Qigong practices. They vary from the simple\, internal forms to the more complex and challenging external styles. They can interest and benefit everyone\, from the most physically challenged to the super athlete. There are Qigong classes for children\, senior citizens\, and every age group in between. Since Qigong can be practiced anywhere or at any time\, there is no need to buy special clothing or to join a health club. \nQigong’s great appeal is that everyone can benefit\, regardless of ability\, age\, belief system or life circumstances. \nAnyone can enrich their lives by adding Qigong to their daily routine. Children learning to channel their energy and develop increased concentration; office workers learning Qigong to reduce stress; seniors participating in gentle movements to enhance balance and their quality of life; caregivers embracing a practice to develop their ability to help others; prisons instituting Qigong programs to restore balance in inmates lives; midwives using Qigong techniques to ease child birth. \nWhen an individual or group assumes responsibility and takes action for their health and healing\, we all benefit. It is best to get referrals from people whose judgment you have confidence in. Check the Yellow Pages for Tai Chi schools\, acupuncturists\, or martial art academies. The National Qigong Association member directory is also an excellent source for finding instructors. \nKeep in mind the following criteria for choosing a qualified instructor: what is their background and experience; are they of good character; do they treat everyone fairly and with respect; do they live what they teach; do they refrain from making wild\, unsubstantiated claims; do they encourage and bring out a student’s highest potential? While keeping these points in mind\, remember to trust your intuition in finding an instructor who is right for you. \nHow can I learn if there aren’t any teachers near me?\nIf there are no instructors in your area\, many teachers regularly travel to give workshops in all regions of the country. Many excellent instructional books and videos are also available. \nBegin by familiarizing yourself with the many resources available for learning Qigong. The internet is one of the best tools today for learning about Qigong. \nSeek referrals in your area and visit local classes. Attending the annual NQA conference also provides an introduction to many styles of Qigong and practitioners from around the world. \nAfter you have looked into some of these resources\, find a style you feel comfortable with\, and develop a consistent daily practice. It is recommended by experienced teachers to stay with a form for at least 100 days. A consistent practice is the most important asset you can develop. \nWhen beginners ask\, “What is the most important aspect of practicing Qigong?” The answer is always…”just do it.” \nThe National Qigong Association does not use nor recognize the terms Master andGrandmaster. \n\nWhat is Qigong? by the National Qigong Association\nis licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Unported License.

SUMMARY:Chinese Food Therapy: Summer
DESCRIPTION:Chinese Food Therapy: Summer\nThe principles of Chinese Dietary Therapy take into account the energetic properties of foods that can transform health. Find out how to nourish your body and boost your chi in the spring! There will be food tastings and recipes provided! \nAccording to Chinese Medicine\, there are foods that can heal you and foods that can harm you\, based on your imbalance or constitutional make up. These foods are classified by their elemental affiliation\, temperature\, season\, flavor\, and their balance. As a general rule\, always eat foods that are in season\, local\, and never over eat one flavor. \nThe Summer season pertains to the Fire element\, the most yang season of the year. During this time\, we run the risk of dehydration\, heat exhaustion\, and damaging our digestion by eating foods that are too damp and heavy (ice cream and barbeques).Reat More: Summer Chinese_Food_Therapy

SUMMARY:The Basics of QiGong

\n Way of the Tea \nCome prepared to taste! \n  \n Aged Puerh Tea \n  \n  \n“Chinese tea culture.” Teapedia\, . 2 Jun 2013\, 06:25 UTC. 11 Apr 2016\, 13:33 <http://teapedia.org/eng/index.php?title=Chinese_tea_culture&oldid=286>

SUMMARY:Supercharging Your Health With Sprouts
DESCRIPTION:Supercharging Your Health With Sprouts\nSprouting is the process whereby seeds are germinated and eaten either raw or cooked. Seeds of many kinds\, including grasses\, grains and beans\, are used for sprouting. Sprouts are very easy to grow\, and have so many nutritional benefits. Sprouting in your kitchen is like having a mini garden in the house all year round. Sprouts contain a significant amount of protein and dietary fiber\, as well as vitamin K\, folate\, pantothenic acid\, niacin\, thiamin\, vitamin C\, vitamin A\, and riboflavin. The Chinese used to carry mung beans when on long journeys at sea. They would sprout and eat the mung beans as they contained sufficient amount of vitamin C to prevent scurvy! \nIn this lecture\, Bruce Roff\, Senior Associate of SOPHIA Natural Health Center\, will share the simple steps to sprouting\, detail the health benefits\, and offer samples of different varieties of sprouts to taste!

SUMMARY:“The Basics of QiGong” (Chi Kung)
DESCRIPTION:Qigong (Chi Kung) means cultivating energy\nQigong is an over 5\,000 year old Chinese health method that combines slow\, graceful movements with mental concentration and breathing. The standing postures and breathing exercises improve circulation\, reduce stress\, cultivate and balance chi or “life energy\, and enhances the immune system. \nThis will be a participatory seminar – loose fitting clothes are suggested. Exercise is gentle\, there are no restrictions\, anyone can do it! \nCost: $20 donation – FREE if you bring a guest!\nRSVP: 203-740-9300 \nWhat is Qigong? The National Qigong Association \nQigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures\, breathing techniques and focused intention. However\, the slow gentle movements of most Qigong forms can be easily adapted\, even for the physically challenged and can be practiced by all age groups.\nLike any other system of health care\, Qigong is not a panacea\, but it is certainly a highly effective health care practice. Many health care professionals recommend Qigong as an important form of alternative complementary medicine. \nQigong creates an awareness of and influences dimensions of our being that are not part of traditional exercise programs. Most exercises do not involve the meridian system used in acupuncture nor do they emphasize the importance of adding mind intent and breathing techniques to physical movements. One of the more important long-term effects is that Qigong reestablishes the body/mind/soul connection.\nPeople do Qigong to maintain health\, heal their bodies\, calm their minds\, and reconnect with their spirit.\nWhen these three aspects of our being are integrated\, it encourages a positive outlook on life and helps eliminate harmful attitudes and behaviors. It also creates a balanced life style\, which brings greater harmony\, stability\, and enjoyment\nThere are a wide variety of Qigong practices. They vary from the simple\, internal forms to the more complex and challenging external styles. They can interest and benefit everyone\, from the most physically challenged to the super athlete. There are Qigong classes for children\, senior citizens\, and every age group in between. Since Qigong can be practiced anywhere or at any time\, there is no need to buy special clothing or to join a health club.\nQigong’s great appeal is that everyone can benefit\, regardless of ability\, age\, belief system or life circumstances. \nKeep in mind the following criteria for choosing a qualified instructor: what is their background and experience; are they of good character; do they treat everyone fairly and with respect; do they live\, what they teach; do they refrain from making wild\, unsubstantiated claims; do they encourage and bring out a student’s highest potential? While keeping these points in mind\, remember to trust your intuition in finding an instructor who is right for you.\nHow can I learn if there aren’t any teachers near me?\nIf there are no instructors in your area\, many teachers regularly travel to give workshops in all regions of the country. Many excellent instructional books and videos are also available.\nBegin by familiarizing yourself with the many resources available for learning Qigong. The internet is one of the best tools today for learning about Qigong.\nSeek referrals in your area and visit local classes. Attending the annual NQA conference also provides an introduction to many styles of Qigong and practitioners from around the world.\nAfter you have looked into some of these resources\, find a style you feel comfortable with\, and develop a consistent daily practice. It is recommended by experienced teachers to stay with a form for at least 100 days. A consistent practice is the most important asset you can develop. \nWhen beginners ask\, “What is the most important aspect of practicing Qigong?” The answer is always…”just do it.” \nThe National Qigong Association does not use nor recognize the terms Master and Grandmaster. \nWhat is Qigong? by the National Qigong Association\n\nWhat is Qigong? by the National Qigong Association\nis licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Unported License.\nInquiries for permissions beyond the scope of this license may be made by contacting us. \n

SUMMARY:Dr. Bruce Roff - “Way of the Tea”
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bruce Roff will introduce you to the Chinese Tea Culture and explain various teas and their healing/medicinal properties. He’ll also demonstrate the art of making tea.\nCome prepared to taste! Various teas will be available for purchase! \nDr. Bruce Roff has had the privilege of studying acupuncture\, medical qigong\, and the Chinese theory with Dr. Jeffrey Yuen\, an 88th generation Taoist priest\, Sat Chuen Hon\, Taoist lineage holder of the Dragon Gate School\, and Dr. Ling Bin\, practitioner of Medical Qigong\, Acupuncture and Herbology. \n\n“Chinese people are believed to have enjoyed tea drinking for more than 4\,000 years. Legend has it that Yan Di\, one of three rulers in ancient times\, tasted all kinds of herbs to find medical cures. One day\,as he was being poisoned by some herb he had ingested; a drop of water from a tea tree dripped into his mouth and he was saved. For a long time\, tea was used as an herbal medicine. During the Western Zhou Dynasty\, it was a religious offering. During the Spring and Autumn Period\, people ate fresh tea leaves as vegetables. With the popularization of Buddhism from the Three Kingdoms to the Northern and Southern Dynasties\, its refreshing effect made it a favorite among monks in Za-Zen meditation.”              Source: Travel China Guide \n  \n\nCost: $20 donation – FREE if you bring a guest!
