SUMMARY:QiGong For Health
DESCRIPTION:QiGong For Health \nTraditional Chinese Exercises To Balance Body\, Mind & Spirit\nQigong is an over 5\,000 year old Chinese health method that combines slow\, graceful movements with mental concentration and breathing. \nThese postures and breathing exercises improve circulation\, reduce stress\, cultivate and balance chi or “life energy\, and enhance the immune system! In this seminar\, Dr. Kenneth Hoffman\, DACM\, Medical Director of SOPHIA Natural Health Center\, will share simple exercises that you can practice every day to improve and balance your mental and physical health. \n  \nThis will be a participatory seminar – loose fitting clothes are suggested. Exercise is gentle and can be done sitting or standing\, there are no restrictions\, anyone can do it!\n\n \n \nCultural Arts Coalition\n67 Main Street\, Suite 101\nBrewster\, NY 10509 \n(845) 363-8330\nTOSCAC2010@gmail.com \n  \n  \n\nWhat is Qigong?\nQigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures\, breathing techniques and focused intention. \nThe word Qigong (Chi Kung) is made up of two Chinese words. Qi is pronounced chee and is usually translated to mean the life force or vital-energy that flows through all things in the universe. \nThe second word\, Gong\, pronounced gung\, means accomplishment\, or skill that is cultivated through steady practice. Together\, Qigong (Chi Kung) means cultivating energy\, it is a system practiced for health maintenance\, healing and increasing vitality. \nQigong is an integration of physical postures\, breathing techniques\, and focused intentions. \nQigong practices can be classified as martial\, medical\, or spiritual. All styles have three things in common: they all involve a posture\, (whether moving or stationary)\, breathing techniques\, and mental focus. Some practices increase the Qi; others circulate it\, use it to cleanse and heal the body\, store it\, or emit Qi to help heal others. Practices vary from the soft internal styles such as Tai Chi; to the external\, vigorous styles such as Kung Fu. However\, the slow gentle movements of most Qigong forms can be easily adapted\, even for the physically challenged and can be practiced by all age groups. \nLike any other system of health care\, Qigong is not a panacea\, but it is certainly a highly effective health care practice. Many health care professionals recommend Qigong as an important form of alternative complementary medicine. \nQigong creates an awareness of and influences dimensions of our being that are not part of traditional exercise programs. Most other forms of exercise do not involve the meridian system used in acupuncture nor do they emphasize the importance of adding mindful intent and breathing techniques to physical movements. When these dimensions are added\, the benefits of exercise increase exponentially. \nThe gentle\, rhythmic movements of Qigong reduce stress\, build stamina\, increase vitality\, and enhance the immune system. It has also been found to improve cardiovascular\, respiratory\, circulatory\, lymphatic and digestive functions. \nThose who maintain a consistent practice of Qigong find that it helps one regain a youthful vitality\, maintain health even into old age and helps speed recovery from illness. Western scientific research confirms that Qigong reduces hypertension and the incidence of falling in the aged population. One of the more important long-term effects is that Qigong reestablishes the body/mind/soul connection. \nPeople do Qigong to maintain health\, heal their bodies\, calm their minds\, and reconnect with their spirit. \nWhen these three aspects of our being are integrated\, it encourages a positive outlook on life and helps eliminate harmful attitudes and behaviors. It also creates a balanced life style\, which brings greater harmony\, stability\, and enjoyment \nThere are a wide variety of Qigong practices. They vary from the simple\, internal forms to the more complex and challenging external styles. They can interest and benefit everyone\, from the most physically challenged to the super athlete. There are Qigong classes for children\, senior citizens\, and every age group in between. Since Qigong can be practiced anywhere or at any time\, there is no need to buy special clothing or to join a health club. \nQigong’s great appeal is that everyone can benefit\, regardless of ability\, age\, belief system or life circumstances. \nAnyone can enrich their lives by adding Qigong to their daily routine. Children learning to channel their energy and develop increased concentration; office workers learning Qigong to reduce stress; seniors participating in gentle movements to enhance balance and their quality of life; caregivers embracing a practice to develop their ability to help others; prisons instituting Qigong programs to restore balance in inmates lives; midwives using Qigong techniques to ease child birth. \nWhen an individual or group assumes responsibility and takes action for their health and healing\, we all benefit. It is best to get referrals from people whose judgment you have confidence in. Check the Yellow Pages for Tai Chi schools\, acupuncturists\, or martial art academies. The National Qigong Association member directory is also an excellent source for finding instructors. \nKeep in mind the following criteria for choosing a qualified instructor: what is their background and experience; are they of good character; do they treat everyone fairly and with respect; do they live what they teach; do they refrain from making wild\, unsubstantiated claims; do they encourage and bring out a student’s highest potential? While keeping these points in mind\, remember to trust your intuition in finding an instructor who is right for you. \nHow can I learn if there aren’t any teachers near me?\nIf there are no instructors in your area\, many teachers regularly travel to give workshops in all regions of the country. Many excellent instructional books and videos are also available. \nBegin by familiarizing yourself with the many resources available for learning Qigong. The internet is one of the best tools today for learning about Qigong. \nSeek referrals in your area and visit local classes. Attending the annual NQA conference also provides an introduction to many styles of Qigong and practitioners from around the world. \nAfter you have looked into some of these resources\, find a style you feel comfortable with\, and develop a consistent daily practice. It is recommended by experienced teachers to stay with a form for at least 100 days. A consistent practice is the most important asset you can develop. \nWhen beginners ask\, “What is the most important aspect of practicing Qigong?” The answer is always…”just do it.” \nThe National Qigong Association does not use nor recognize the terms Master andGrandmaster. \n\nWhat is Qigong? by the National Qigong Association\nis licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Unported License.

SUMMARY:Health & Stress – An Integrative Natural Medicine Approach For A Happier And Healthier Life
DESCRIPTION:Health & Stress\nDr. Ken Hoffman\, will present an Integrative Natural Medicine Approach to “Health and Stress”. Learn about the symptoms of stress\, how stress affects the body’s overall health\, and what a person can do to relieve stress both at work and at home to feel better and enjoy life more. \nWhen:  7:00 pm – 8:00 pm\nWhere:  Studio Around The Corner\, 67 Main St\, Suite 101\, Brewster\, NY\nCost:  FREE! \nBy Dr. Mercola \nStress often starts in your head with a worry or a fear\, but those feelings of anxiety\, and perhaps even panic\, don’t stay there. When you feel stressed\, your body ramps up production of the stress hormones cortisol\, adrenaline\, and norepinephrine. \nThis triggers the start of the stress response\, and\, like a snowball rolling down a mountain\, it gains traction and speed until you’re ready for the proverbial attack. \nAdrenaline\, for instance\, increases your heart rate\, causing your heart to beat faster and ultimately raising blood pressure. Cortisol can interfere with the function of the inner lining of your blood vessels\, triggering plaque buildup in your arteries\, and increasing your risk of heart disease and stroke. \nMeanwhile\, you brain communicates with your gut\, sending the news that you’re stressed\, and your gut responds in suit\, altering what it would normally be doing so your body can collectively work to fight off this imminent stressor (whether it’s really an imminent stressor or not). \nThis stress response can be quite beneficial if you need to run from a predator\, or even quickly cram for a big exam. Things get messy\, however\, when you feel stressed all or most of the time. \nWhile an occasional stress response is normal and even healthy\, ongoing\, constant stress is not. On the contrary\, it’s the recipe for sickness\, from chronic diseases to acute infections…. \n

SUMMARY:Discover the secrets of Chinese Medicinal Cuisine / Food Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Discover the secrets of Chinese Medicinal Cuisine / Food Therapy\nThe Integrative Dietary Therapy System combines the wisdom of food energetics in Chinese Medicine with the scientific knowledge of nutrition. By utilizing both aspects of food and nutrition\, this therapy will aid in the healing process and improve the patient’s overall health. This lecture will go over the secrets of Chinese Medicinal Cuisine and gives you dietary guidelines\, food choices\, and how to utilize the Chinese Dietary classifications to improve health imbalances \nFrom China Highlights \n“General Principals of Chinese Medicinal Cuisine\n1. Balance\n\nGoji berries is a widely used ingredient in Chinese medicine cuisine\nThe basic idea is to balance the qi and the body fluids — the fundamentals of Chinese traditional medicine. It is thought that a healthy body or organ has a proper balance of these things. When they are out of balance\, there is disease or sickness. \nThe environment or physical injury disrupts the balance. For example\, cold weather causes a lack of qi or high yin in the body. So high yang foods are eaten. In hot weather when there is naturally too much yang\, high yin foods are eaten. Recipes for each season are described below. \n2. Adding Medicinal Herbs\nHealing herbs or animal parts can be added to the diet to heal disease. Many of the same herbs are used by Western herbalists and herbalists in other parts of the world for the same conditions\, so this strongly suggests that the herbs have real medicinal effects. \n3. Using Heats and Flavors\nAll foods are categorized by qi temperature\, ranging from high yang to high yin\, and one of the five food flavors (sour\, sweet\, bitter\, hot and salty). A food item’s qi temperature and specific flavor influences the body in its own way. \nIt is thought that people should generally include all the flavors in every meal and balance the “heat”. Most Chinese people think that if too much of one type of food is consumed\, it can cause an imbalance in the body. \n4. Mealtime TCM Principles\nThe way you eat also matters. Eating slowly is believed to benefit your health.\nThe ancient texts described not only what to prepare for meals\, but also how to eat meals. You might be surprised at these Chinese customs about eating meals that have been part of the culture for hundreds of years. \n\nTry to avoid overly processed food. Eat naturally.\nEat seasonal vegetables and fruits.\nAlways make sure the vegetables are cooked.\nSit down to eat at a quiet place.\nChew the food well.\nEat slowly. (慢吃 mànchī /man-chrr/ ‘\neat \n slowly’ means “bon appetite!” in China)\nPay attention to your eating\, and get away from distractions. In TCM your mind plays a part in how well you digest food\, so pay attention to the tastes of the food.\nDo not skip meals.\nAfter lunch\, take a nap or rest for a while.”  Read more from China Highlights\n\nWhen: 7:00 p.m.\nWhere: SOPHIA Natural Health Center\, 31 Old Route 7\, Brookfield\, CT\nCost:  Free for current patients and their guests. $50 non-patients\nRSVP: 203-740-9300

SUMMARY:What you need to know about Tao Yin & Stress Reduction
DESCRIPTION:What you need to know about Tao Yin & Stress Reduction. \n\nTao Yin is a type of exercise and self-massage intended to revitalize a person’s internal energy\, which is also referred to as ch’i. The exercises are used to encourage flexibility and strength\, rejuvenating a person’s muscles\, ligaments\, and joints and help release blocked energy within a person’s body. This will be a participatory seminar – loose fitting clothes are suggested. Exercise is gentle\, there are no restrictions\, anyone can do it! \nHow Stress Makes You Sick\nBy Dr. On the contrary\, it’s the recipe for sickness\, from chronic diseases to acute infections. SUMMARY:“Way of the Tea”- The Tea Culture of China
DESCRIPTION:Way of the Tea\nDr. Bruce will introduce you to the Chinese Tea Culture and explain various teas and their healing/medicinal properties. He’ll also demonstrate the art of making tea. \n\n \nWay of the Tea \n\nCome prepared to taste! Various teas will be available for purchase! \nCost:  $20 donation – FREE if you bring a guest! \nChinese tea culture refers to the methods of preparation of tea\, the equipment used to make tea and the occasions in which tea is consumed in China. The terms chayi “Art of Tea 茶藝” and Tea Ceremony have been used\, but the term “Tea Culture 茶文化” includes more than just the ceremony. Also “culture” is easier to translate into English from the Chinese term “art 藝”. \nTea culture in China differs from that of Europe\, Britain or Japan in such things as preparation methods\, tasting methods and the occasions for which it is consumed. Even now\, in both casual and formal Chinese occasions\, tea is consumed regularly. In addition to being a drink\, Chinese tea is used in traditional Chinese medicine and in Chinese cuisine… \nThere are many different ways of brewing Chinese tea depending on variables like the formality of the occasion\, the means of the people preparing it and the kind of tea being brewed. For example\, green teas are more delicate than Oolong teas or black teas and should be brewed with cooler water as a result. The most informal method of brewing tea is the simple adding of leaves to a pot\, and hot water. This method is commonly found in households and restaurants\, as at dim sum (點心) or yum cha (飲茶) in Cantonese restaurants. Two other primary methods of brewing tea are the Chaou method and the Gongfucha method. Chaou brewing tends towards a more formal occasion and is generally used for more delicate teas\, medicinal teas and tea tastings. Gongfucha brewing is a far more formal method of tea brewing (mainly for oolong or double fermented teas like Pu-Erh) although even this method can be made more or less formal depending on the occasion. The first Ming Dynasty Emperor Hongwu contributed to the development of loose tea brewing by banning the production of compressed tea.
