SUMMARY:Lyme Disease Talk
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kenneth  Hoffman\, DACM\, L.Ac.\, Medical Director\, SOPHIA Natural Health Center\, gives his thoughts about Lyme Disease\, and being aware of when you may have contracted it… \nI have talked about this many times but living in such an endemic area\, it is likely that you have had exposure to Lyme or know somebody who has. You might not think you have it because you don’t remember a bite. Now I’m not trying to create fear around this\, but it is serious enough to take notice of and properly diagnose in cases where you may have odd or unusual conditions that nobody can find the root of. \nLyme disease can contribute to over 350 illnesses and is why it is known as “The Great Imitator”. Along with the classic joint pains\, it can mimic diseases like MS\, Dementia\, and Fibromyalgia. Lyme disease can cause mania\, OCD\, schizophrenia\, depression\, anxiety. It can affect the heart by causing symptoms such as arrhythmias\, heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Borrelia can cause Parkinsonism and is present in 90% of chronic fatigue patients. \nAlso\, you may not know that Lyme is now known to spread not only from ticks\, fleas and mosquitoes. New evidence shows it can spread through blood\, saliva\, sexual intercourse\, breast feeding and unpasteurized milk. But you may never feel the bite of a tick because these nasty buggers have an anesthesia in their mouth that numbs that spot they bite so you can’t feel it. \nMost doctors know very little about what to do or how to test. Peer-reviewed journal studies show that the most common blood tests are wrong about 2/3rds of the time. \nThere is hope and it will only come from specialized doctors in the know. First\, there are only a handful of testing labs that can accurately detect Lyme and its dozens of co-infections. Second\, an antibiotic protocol is only partially effective due to the fact that the Lyme spirochete knows how to hide and protect itself (yes\, you heard me right). Studies done in the U.S. and Ecuador proves that a very specific protocol of integrative natural medicine can kill this disease. And from my experience\, you have to repair the damage it does to the body by supporting other systems as well. \nSo if you think that you may have been exposed or have weird symptoms that appear\, call us for a thorough evaluation and to set a specific protocol that could change your life. OR come to my public service lecture on Lyme Disease Support on July 12th at 7PM at SOPHIA Natural Health Center\, 31 Old Route 7\, Brookfield\, CT. Call 203-740-9300 to make a reservation.\n

SUMMARY:Lyme Disease Conference and Health Fair - Western Connecticut University 11th Annual
DESCRIPTION:Annual Lyme Disease  Conference and Health Fair \nThursday\, May 18th \nWhen:  5:00 pm – 9:00 pm \nWhere:  In the Ballroom of the Westside Campus Center\, Western Connecticut\nUniversity\, West Side Campus\, 43 Lake Avenue Extension\, Danbury\, CT   \n\nCost:  FREE! For more information go to www.lymeconnection.org\nWe will be educating the public on an Integrative Natural Medicine approach to Lyme Disease treatment at our booth\, and providing free pain and stress relief treatments at this very important conference. Open to the public\, there will be a host of guest speakers\, practitioners\, and other service and support related businesses sharing the latest information on the testing and treatment of Lyme Disease. If you live in Connecticut\, you shouldn’t miss this Conference! \n \nBy James Groh SYRACUSE\, N.Y. – (NCC NEWS) – Be careful when you go outside this summer. Experts say that there will be an increase in the population of ticks that carry Lyme disease. \n“We are predicting that there will be more ticks with the bacteria that cause Lyme disease\,” said Felicia Keesing\, professor of Biology at Bard College. \nThe reason for the population spike is a result of multiple reactions to natural events in nature over a two year period. \nFirst\, oak trees will molt a higher number of acorns than usual. These nuts are a food source for mice. As the number of acorns increases\, the surrounding habitat becomes more sustainable for larger populations of mice. Ticks are attracted to mice. Since there are more mice in a given area\, there are also more ticks. What exacerbates the issue is when the ticks lay their nearly 3\,0000 eggs. Those larvae hatch\, which results in a spike in the tick population. Then Keesing says\, “when a tick feeds on a mouse it has a 90% chance of getting infected with a Lyme bacterium. When there’s a lot of mice that leads to a lot of infected ticks.” \n\nLong Description\nCreative Commons\, Centers for Disease Control © 2004 \n\nAs shown by the map\, the Midwest and the North East are expected to have the highest threat of Lyme disease. Ticks are attracted to woodland areas. Also\, this map is meant to represent the general areas of where Lyme disease risks are the highest\, not the risk for a specific year. \nUnfortunately\, there isn’t much that can be done about this issue. However\, there are measures people can take to reduce the risk of getting infected. \nBrian Leydet\, a professor at the SUNY school of Environmental Science and Forestry\, says the best way to avoid getting bit is by what he calls primary prevention. \n“Right now we don’t have a good solution. That’s why\, again\, we really promote prevention\, knowledge\, education.” \nLeydet says people should wear long clothing that is a light color so it’s easy to spot ticks. Besides that\, he suggests regular tick checks after going outside and thorough showers. \nThere isn’t much that can be done in the long run either. This spike is a part of a pattern that happens every three to five years and will continue into the foreseeable future\, says Keesing. \nThis is part of the reason why the Tick Project\, which Keesing is a director of\, is trying to find ways to prevent Lyme and other tick related diseases. \nIt’s not just that this year is bad. Keesing says Lyme disease is always an issue\, but it’s augmented during population spikes. \n“Every year is a bad year for Lyme. This is just worse than bad\,” she said. \nFrom https://nccnews.expressions.syr.edu/2017/04/18/increased-chances-of-lyme-disease-this-season/

SUMMARY:Chinese Dietary Therapy – Eating for the Season – SPRING!
DESCRIPTION:Healthy Seasonal Recipes\nThe principles of Chinese Dietary Therapy take into account the energetic properties of foods that can transform health. Find out how to nourish your body and boost your chi for the spring. Food tasting and recipes provided! \nWhen: 7:00 p.m. \nWhere: Studio Around The Corner\, 67 Main Street\, Suite 101\, Brewster\, NY\nCost:  FREE!\nRSVP: www.OTHTheater.org\, toscac2010@gmail.com or 845-363-8330 \n\n Chinese Medicinal Cuisine\n \n Healthy Seasonal Recipes\n \n A lot of people all over the world like to eat Chinese food\, but Chinese medicinal cuisine is a special type — an ancient healing art you can explore. It is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine. Chinese: 食疗 shíliáo /shrr-lyaoww/ ‘food therapy’ If you are interested in exploring traditional Chinese medicinal food for better health\, here is the background\, general principals\, and some recipes. A Brief History of Medicinal Cuisine Authentic Chinese medicinal food dishes are prepared according to traditional recipes and techniques\, based on ancient ideas about how the human body operates. They described the effect of each kind of meat\, grain\, herb\, or vegetable on the human body\, how the body operates\, and gave suggestions about what to prepare to stay healthy or cure disease. The earliest work on these various topics dates from the early Han Dynasty era (206 BC-220 AD) and is called the Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine). It contains the basic ideas of Chinese food therapy. The text gave recommendations on what to eat for different health conditions and different environmental conditions. Ancient Chinese medical books list hundreds of plant\, animal\, and chemical ingredients and tell their specific effects on the human body. These books give ideas about the physical principals involved in human health\, and they describe how herbs or special foods help\, along with TCM techniques such as moxibustion and acupuncture. Since that time\, the basic ideas about food and health have changed little. See more on The History of Chinese Medicine. General Principals of Chinese Medicinal Cuisine 1. Balance GeqiGoji berries is a widely used ingredient in Chinese medicine cuisine The basic idea is to balance the qi and the body fluids — the fundamentals of Chinese traditional medicine. It is thought that a healthy body or organ has a proper balance of these things. When they are out of balance\, there is disease or sickness. The environment or physical injury disrupts the balance. For example\, cold weather causes a lack of qi or high yin in the body. So high yang foods are eaten. In hot weather when there is naturally too much yang\, high yin foods are eaten. Recipes for each season are described below. 2. Adding Medicinal Herbs Healing herbs or animal parts can be added to the diet to heal disease. Many of the same herbs are used by Western herbalists and herbalists in other parts of the world for the same conditions\, so this strongly suggests that the herbs have real medicinal effects. 3. Using Heats and Flavors All foods are categorized by qi temperature\, ranging from high yang to high yin\, and one of the five food flavors (sour\, sweet\, bitter\, hot and salty). A food item’s qi temperature and specific flavor influences the body in its own way. It is thought that people should generally include all the flavors in every meal and balance the “heat”. Most Chinese people think that if too much of one type of food is consumed\, it can cause an imbalance in the body. 4. Mealtime TCM Principles eating healthilyThe way you eat also matters. Eating slowly is believed to benefit your health. The ancient texts described not only what to prepare for meals\, but also how to eat meals. You might be surprised at these Chinese customs about eating meals that have been part of the culture for hundreds of years. Try to avoid overly processed food. Eat naturally. Eat seasonal vegetables and fruits. Always make sure the vegetables are cooked. Sit down to eat at a quiet place. Chew the food well. Eat slowly. (慢吃 mànchī /man-chrr/ ‘eat slowly’ means “bon appetite!” in China) Pay attention to your eating\, and get away from distractions. In TCM your mind plays a part in how well you digest food\, so pay attention to the tastes of the food. Do not skip meals. After lunch\, take a nap or rest for a while. SUMMARY:Chinese Dietary Therapy – Eating for the Season – SPRING!
DESCRIPTION:Eating for the Season – SPRING!\nThe principles of Chinese Dietary Therapy take into account the energetic properties of foods that can transform health. Find out how to nourish your body and boost your chi in the spring! \nRSVP: To our front desk at 203-740-9300 \n  \n“Spring: Asparagus and Vinegar Recipe \nIn the spring\, things come alive and start growing. It is important for living things to have more than usual yang for growth. \nIt is thought that the liver and gallbladder are especially important at this time. It is important to eat the green seasonal vegetables that sprout out at these times since they supply the necessary yang and help to nourish the liver. “Green is the color of the liver and of spring” is a saying. And drink fresh sour juices\, since these stimulate the qi. \nIt is also thought to be a time when the body does “spring cleaning” on itself by getting rid of stored fats and meat\, so eating less meat and fat is considered to be better for health. \nHere is a light and easy-to-make vegetarian dish and drink that is a good example of a medicinal springtime meal. \nInstructions \nWash a bunch of asparagus and a carrot in clean water without detergent. Then chop up the vegetables and lightly steam them until the asparagus is slightly tender and bright green. Note that the vegetables cook quickly so don’t steam them long. \nPrepare a dressing by simply adding about two parts of virgin olive oil to one part of plum vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Plum vinegar is preferred\, because it is a springtime fruit. Then pour the dressing on the vegetables and enjoy the dish with some lemonade. \nTo make the lemonade\, simply squeeze a fresh lemon and add the juice to clean water.”

He will share and demonstrate how you can restore your health through a designed clinical nutrition program that addresses the root cause of damaged health and find out what your body needs to heal itself.              \nRSVP: www.OTHTheater.org\, toscac2010@gmail.com or 845-363-8330                 \n\nAchieving Balance Through the Art of Eating: Demystifying Eastern Nutrition and Blending it with Western Nutrition\n“Eastern and Western approaches to nutrition are unique and possess both strengths and weaknesses. Blending the best of both techniques will allow for the development of an integrative nutrition system that is more effective than either tradition on its own. The Western view to nutrition is already adopting certain attributes of the Eastern medicine philosophy as exemplified by the progression towards individualized nutrition through methods such as nutrigenetics. Nevertheless\, many differences still remain between Eastern and Western nutritional concepts. Becoming fluent in both Western and Eastern methodologies can ensure the extraction of the best from both techniques for the development of a comprehensive\, systematic\, and holistic nutritional approach to achieve optimal health. “ \nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3943006/

SUMMARY:Basics of QiGong
DESCRIPTION:Basics of QiGong\nQigong is an over 5\,000 year old Chinese health method that combines slow\, graceful movements with mental concentration and breathing. The standing postures and breathing exercises improve circulation\, reduce stress\, cultivate and balance chi or “life energy\, and enhances the immune system!\nThis will be a participatory seminar – loose fitting clothes are suggested. Exercise is gentle\, there are no restrictions\, anyone can do it! \nWhen: 7:00 p.m. \nWhere: SOPHIA Natural Health Center\, 31 Old Route 7\, Brookfield\, CT\nCost:  FREE!\nRSVP: 203-740-9300 \n \nMore about QiGong at Amazon \nWhat is Qigong?\nQigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures\, breathing techniques and focused intention. \nThe word Qigong (Chi Kung) is made up of two Chinese words. Qi is pronounced chee and is usually translated to mean the life force or vital-energy that flows through all things in the universe. \nThe second word\, Gong\, pronounced gung\, means accomplishment\, or skill that is cultivated through steady practice. Together\, Qigong (Chi Kung) means cultivating energy\, it is a system practiced for health maintenance\, healing and increasing vitality. \nQigong is an integration of physical postures\, breathing techniques\, and focused intentions. \nQigong practices can be classified as martial\, medical\, or spiritual. All styles have three things in common: they all involve a posture\, (whether moving or stationary)\, breathing techniques\, and mental focus. Some practices increase the Qi; others circulate it\, use it to cleanse and heal the body\, store it\, or emit Qi to help heal others. Practices vary from the soft internal styles such as Tai Chi; to the external\, vigorous styles such as Kung Fu. However\, the slow gentle movements of most Qigong forms can be easily adapted\, even for the physically challenged and can be practiced by all age groups. \nLike any other system of health care\, Qigong is not a panacea\, but it is certainly a highly effective health care practice. Many health care professionals recommend Qigong as an important form of alternative complementary medicine. \nQigong creates an awareness of and influences dimensions of our being that are not part of traditional exercise programs. Most other forms of exercise do not involve the meridian system used in acupuncture nor do they emphasize the importance of adding mindful intent and breathing techniques to physical movements. When these dimensions are added\, the benefits of exercise increase exponentially. \nThe gentle\, rhythmic movements of Qigong reduce stress\, build stamina\, increase vitality\, and enhance the immune system. It has also been found to improve cardiovascular\, respiratory\, circulatory\, lymphatic and digestive functions. \nThose who maintain a consistent practice of Qigong find that it helps one regain a youthful vitality\, maintain health even into old age and helps speed recovery from illness. Western scientific research confirms that Qigong reduces hypertension and the incidence of falling in the aged population. One of the more important long-term effects is that Qigong reestablishes the body/mind/soul connection. \nPeople do Qigong to maintain health\, heal their bodies\, calm their minds\, and reconnect with their spirit. \nWhen these three aspects of our being are integrated\, it encourages a positive outlook on life and helps eliminate harmful attitudes and behaviors. It also creates a balanced life style\, which brings greater harmony\, stability\, and enjoyment \nThere are a wide variety of Qigong practices. They vary from the simple\, internal forms to the more complex and challenging external styles. They can interest and benefit everyone\, from the most physically challenged to the super athlete. There are Qigong classes for children\, senior citizens\, and every age group in between. Since Qigong can be practiced anywhere or at any time\, there is no need to buy special clothing or to join a health club. \nQigong’s great appeal is that everyone can benefit\, regardless of ability\, age\, belief system or life circumstances. \nAnyone can enrich their lives by adding Qigong to their daily routine. Children learning to channel their energy and develop increased concentration; office workers learning Qigong to reduce stress; seniors participating in gentle movements to enhance balance and their quality of life; caregivers embracing a practice to develop their ability to help others; prisons instituting Qigong programs to restore balance in inmates lives; midwives using Qigong techniques to ease child birth. \nWhen an individual or group assumes responsibility and takes action for their health and healing\, we all benefit. It is best to get referrals from people whose judgment you have confidence in. Check the Yellow Pages for Tai Chi schools\, acupuncturists\, or martial art academies. The National Qigong Association member directory is also an excellent source for finding instructors. \nKeep in mind the following criteria for choosing a qualified instructor: what is their background and experience; are they of good character; do they treat everyone fairly and with respect; do they live what they teach; do they refrain from making wild\, unsubstantiated claims; do they encourage and bring out a student’s highest potential? While keeping these points in mind\, remember to trust your intuition in finding an instructor who is right for you. \nHow can I learn if there aren’t any teachers near me?\nIf there are no instructors in your area\, many teachers regularly travel to give workshops in all regions of the country. Many excellent instructional books and videos are also available. \nBegin by familiarizing yourself with the many resources available for learning Qigong. The internet is one of the best tools today for learning about Qigong. \nSeek referrals in your area and visit local classes. Attending the annual NQA conference also provides an introduction to many styles of Qigong and practitioners from around the world. \nAfter you have looked into some of these resources\, find a style you feel comfortable with\, and develop a consistent daily practice. It is recommended by experienced teachers to stay with a form for at least 100 days. A consistent practice is the most important asset you can develop. \nWhen beginners ask\, “What is the most important aspect of practicing Qigong?” The answer is always…”just do it.” \nThe National Qigong Association does not use nor recognize the terms Master and Grandmaster. \n\nWhat is Qigong? by the National Qigong Association\nis licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Unported License.\nInquiries for permissions beyond the scope of this license may be made by contacting us.
