Symptoms & Causes of Menopause

Menopause affects each woman differently. Before the onset of symptoms, women will be in the Perimenopause phase . This typically begins several years before menopause, when the ovaries gradually make less estrogen. Perimenopause lasts up until menopause, when the ovaries stop releasing eggs. In the last 1 to 2 years of perimenopause, the drop in estrogen quickens. At this stage, many women have menopause symptoms.*

At this stage, the ovaries have stopped releasing eggs and making most of their estrogen. Your periods may no longer be regular. They may be shorter or last longer. You might bleed more or less than usual. Physical symptoms vary woman to woman however most common include*:

  • Irregular periods / vaginal dryness
  • Hot flashes / chills / night sweats
  • Sleep problems.
  • Mood changes.
  • Weight gain and slowed metabolism.

Your Different Treatment Options

Acupuncture

Acupuncture cannot stop or slow the onset of menopause. However, acupuncture can address certain symptoms connected to menopause, for example*:

  • Acupuncture can limit the severity and occurrence of hot flashes.
  • Acupuncture may also help combat the side effects of a slowing metabolism.
  • Have shown that acupuncture combined with better nutrition can help manage obesity.
  • That acupuncture could lead to an increased libido and a healthier hormone balance.

Tui Na

Tui Na is not generally used for pleasure and relaxation, but rather as a treatment to address specific patterns of disharmony. As such, practitioners use it for many of the same reasons and according to the same principles as acupuncture. Like acupuncture, TCM uses Tui Na to harmonize yin and yang in the body by manipulating the Qi in the acupuncture channels.*

Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.*

Exercise

Dealing with menopause can be stressful, and activities like yoga and meditation can reduce the tension through their low-key approaches and deep-breathing practices, strength training and cardio are also excellent ways to stay healthy while your body is going through changes.

Dietary Therapy

Declining estrogen levels negatively impact your metabolism, potentially leading to weight gain. Making sure you’re getting the proper nutrients is important through dietary therapy.*
