Symptoms & Causes Of Carpal Tunnel
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that causes numbness, tingling, and other symptoms in the hand and arm. Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by a compressed nerve in the carpal tunnel, a narrow passageway on the palm side of your wrist. Over time, carpal tunnel can also affect your grip and ability to pinch. There is no single cause in many cases. It may be that a combination of risk factors contributes to the development of the condition.
- Sex: Women are three times more likely than men to develop carpal tunnel syndrome
- Heredity. This is likely an important factor. The carpal tunnel may be smaller in some people or there may be anatomic differences that change the amount of space for the nerve—and these traits can run in families.
- Occupation: It’s possible that working with vibrating tools or on an assembly line that requires prolonged or repetitive flexing of the wrist may create harmful pressure on the median nerve or worsen existing nerve damage.
- Hand and wrist position: Doing activities that involve extreme flexion or extension of the hand and wrist for a prolonged period of time can increase pressure on the nerve.
- Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause swelling.
- Health conditions: Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid gland imbalance are conditions that are associated with carpal tunnel syndrome.
Symptoms usually start gradually, with frequent burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle fingers. Some carpal tunnel sufferers say their fingers feel useless and swollen, even though little or no swelling is apparent.
Your Different Treatment Options
Exercise
If you have mild or moderate symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, you might get some benefit from a few simple exercises given to you by your doctor. Depending on the severity, some exercises may be more beneficial than others. Yoga is also a great low-impact activity to help relieve symptoms.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture, an ancient technique of traditional Chinese medicine, has long been used to treat chronic pain. These specific points can help with inflammation, relieving some pain for clients that may be suffering. Acupuncture and its medical techniques are much easier on your body than traditional medicine and promote natural healing using your body’s energy. Acupuncture can manage symptoms especially after multiple sessions.*
Manuel Therapy
In more severe cases, surgery may be your best option. Physical therapy treatment is important after surgery to help restore strength to the wrist and to learn to modify habits that may have led to symptoms in the first place.Your holistic doctor can help create a custom plan that will best benefit your condition. They may also be able to use hands on techniques to stimulate strength and function in the affected area.
Tui Na
This form of hands on therapy is a great alternative to acupuncture. This massage therapy relieves pain within the patient by increasing blood flow throughout the body.* This medical massage can be applied to the wrist to eliminate scar tissue and carpal subluxations. It’s also an excellent alternative to needles.
